Guna is a new word in English. However, many people don’t understand its importance beyond its reference to an energy or quality. Yoga and Jyotish practitioners will recognize its simplistic association with the judgement of energy being very high, very low, or perfectly balanced.

Being a quality, its importance is like love. Dissection of love, or a guna, is impossible. Imagine getting a cup, or a pound, of love? We know love exists, even though we can only see the result of it. As a quality within all matter, nothing, seen or unseen, can exist without having some representation of the three qualities described in the word guna.

Defined as an energy, guna can work or produce heat. Defined as a quality, it shows the characteristics or attributes of someone or something that determine the likely effectiveness of the person or strengths, usefulness and methods of application.

There will be longer and more detailed articles incorporating the use of guna knowledge in the future.
