One of the joys of reading the Masters is tripping over some of the statements they make and then checking them out so see if what they wrote is true in real life. What follows is an example. I apologize ahead of time to those readers who do not understand all the language being used. However, I have tried to make these patterns as clear as possible.
Jaimini 1.3.42 reads: “Venus and Gaunapada (UL) aspected or conjoined by Rahu and the Sun, cause blindness.”
This is a very specific sutra, leaving nothing to the imagination.
Conditions of this sutra include:
(a)Venus should be conjoined or aspected by Rahu, a pattern that indicates eye problems by itself, and
(b)The Upapada Lagna (UL) should be conjoined or aspected by the Sun, which also indicates weak eyesight.
The UL or Upapada Lagna is nothing more than the arudha of the 12th house. In order to find the arudha, take the following steps:
- Identify the lord of the 12th house.
- Count from the 12th to the lord.
- From the lord of the 12th house count the same number of signs to find the UL.
Finding confirmation for various sutras can be enlightening, as well as increasing the tremendous awe that we cannot help but hold for the words of the Rishi.
What follows are examples of two charts supporting this one sutra.
Having read this sutra, two musicians, both of whom are blind, came to mind. If this sutra were right, the patterns referred to would be in the charts of these men. Both charts support the abundant talent each man holds, however their charts are simply used to show the presence of the specific sutra discussed above.

Here we see the two conditions for blindness are fully functioning. Venus is conjoined Rahu in the 12th house, and the Sun is making a rasi aspect to the Upapada Lagna (UL) in Capricorn.
Andrea Bocelli

Again both criteria are met. Rahu is making a rasi drishti onto Venus in the first house. The parivartana between the Sun and Mercury results in the Sun being in the first , where it makes a rasi drishti onto the Upapada lagna in Aries in the 9th house.
It’s finding treasures like these that keeps my interest glued to Jyotish and my mind in constant awe of the ancient teachings. I wonder how the sages of old could possibly have known so much?
