The planets Uranus, Saturn and Pluto definitely exist and there is no question about their influence on a tropical chart. So, why aren’t these planets used in Jyotish? In order to answer this question a little background information must be provided.

A tropical chart focuses solely on influences flowing from our solar system and these three new comers are certainly part of that. How they have been incorporated into the Western system certainly seems appropriate for that system. A Vedic chart does not incorporate the new comers however they do incorporate much more than factors related to the solar system. Further, Jyotish has developed a comprehensive and totally integrated method of blending influences such that the inclusion of even one more factor would break the system.

So, it is not a case of ignoring the existence of Uranus, Saturn and Pluto, it is simply that their presence is neither necessary, nor part of the factors embraced within the structure of Jyotish. Does that mean they have no value whatsoever within a Vedic chart? Of course not; the ancients knew about the existence of these planets and had names for them.

The main point is that these planets are not part of the hierarchy used in Jyotish, just as the Nakshatras, Vargas or Dasa systems are not part of the Western hierarchy.  These differences do not make one system ‘better’ than another they merely show the systems are different.

Any student would be wise to have even a basic understanding of the methods and rationale used by other systems. Having done that a student will learn that any system of astrology demands the tools designed to work in that system are the ones to use. Besides, it is never wise to mix apples and oranges.
